I’m curious. The character of Mr. Golden Suit seems to have done a rather abrupt about-face over the last few strips. Was this planned in advance, or did you do it in response to the comment on the October 26 comic?

If I had to guess, Golden Gus was always planned to be a subversion of the uncaring executive trope, and the whole godly aura thing is just a visual metaphor for how intimidating it is to have the head honcho himself show up. Andy loves his literal visual metaphors, after all.

The fact that he slips back into that form momentarily when he confronts Paul one-on-one seems to highlight that. I think Oct26 guy was just knee-jerk jumping the gun.

Always planned, as it was always a matter of perspective for our characters. It can be scary facing down the boss of bosses with all the power until you realize they’re just humans too. You just need to talk to them! Unless you’re Paul, because he’s still apparently intimidated.

Paul’s pretty much either intimidated or nervous by just about anything that threatens to up-end the routine he’s settled into – which of course also includes nearly every new thing that Kyra leapt straight into while pulling him along. It’d be a real uphill battle to shake anyone out of that over time.

…Also, can I just say that I very much relate to Paul’s deer-in-the-headlights reaction to being asked what his plans, dreams, long-term goals, etc are? Asking me where I see myself in 5-10 years at this junction is a good way to freeze me up like a glitched game character XP.
