Oh! Look at that. I’ve reached the end of the big mega Eon story I dreamed up a decade ago. For the moment I’m not going to think about the nine years it took to get this point. Today I’m going to marvel at how this big two part story was started almost exactly a year ago with the Technology chapter last August. I mean, yeah I knew it was going to be the big one and it ended up being 98 pages long … but still WOW what a trip.

Oh? What happens next you ask? I’ll be back next MONDAY with a little something to post here along with all my thoughts on the future. But for now, let’s enjoy the end of the Eon saga together. Let’s have a weekend to collect our thoughts and take a breather. I mean, I have to work all weekend, but you know what I mean!

See you then you wonderful readers!

If this were an anime then this would be the moment when the episode credits are about to roll. The normal resolution kind of music is playing. But before it really ends something even more threatening and unknown than Eon shows up!

I’ve really enjoyed this comic. For such a weird, zany story, you’ve put some real heart, depth, and substance into this. I like how most conflicts are solved by reaching an understanding of the people around you, by learning to live together. It’s a good approach to storytelling and I think it’s important, especially in the current climate. Because of that, I have to admit I was disappointed by how the Eon situation was resolved.

After spending the whole story learning how our villains weren’t as villainous as we thought and using that to solve the conflicts, we faced the climactic villain by… turning her off. Disengaging. Devaluing her. She’s going to go sit on a shelf somewhere collecting dust.

Yeah, Paul and Kyra make a big deal about how she’s just “fake” life, but she sure doesn’t *act* fake. She acts like she has emotions and desires, and she’s even irrational in a way that a seems unlikely for machine “faking” consciousness (computers don’t live in a state of denial: https://itsadinosaur.com/character/eon/page/8/ ). I see her cracks, like when she admits that she’s programmed to act angry when explaining danger, but I also get a strong sense that she’s more than just a bunch of chips and circuits. As much as Paul and Kyra seem convinced Eon isn’t actually alive, I can’t share their conviction.

The argument that everything she does is just fake programs acting out fake emotions sounds an awful lot like how people used to say animals didn’t really think or feel, they just acted on instinct (biological programming).

So yeah. After giving the other antagonists depth and nuance so we could reach an understanding, the solution to Eon seems hollow.

I wanted a big goofy comic that still has a big heart, so I’m glad to hear that.

As for Eon, well, that’s certainly given me a lot to think about all morning haha

I could just brush it off and say “don’t worry I have many more ideas for the future of this story.” Eon still exists in the world to show up again. I can assure you “does only human consciousness count” will be an important part in what’s to come. However that doesn’t help us here & now, and who knows how many years it’ll take me to get to that point. So I do have a few thoughts.

I think I created this issue because of perspective. From day one I’ve been saying to myself “Hehe Eon is a computer look at how crazy it acts and nobody knows!” However BECAUSE the readers don’t know that, Eon is just another wonderfully crazy character. When the twist drops, they’re not going to suddenly dismiss her like Paul did. Eon is great! It’s certainly interesting that in a comic about legitimization an animals consciousness an AI’s consciousness is thrown under the bus. But even before the story was done I was getting the feeling that it was going to come off less “interesting” and more cruel to Eon in the end. Phoo. Well, hopefully it didn’t ruin the overall comic and future stories make up for it … whenever that may be. I’ll talk about it more on Monday!

Bingo. This issue also manifest during Kyra’s clash with dogs and with zoo animals. Kyra dismissed their intelligence as too inferior because they couldn’t express and communicate complex ideas like she could. All she want to do back then is to be among animals that’s not humans and that meaning interacting with those that are her physical and intellectual equal. There’s none so far, so all of this has got to be frustrating for her.

So Paul went through similar arc with Eon, dismissing her status as intelligence as being artifical despite being actually well developed for a machine. Of course, he was trying to save Kyra and see Eon’s refusal to adjust and change to accommodate both Kyra and Paul wellbeing as something that didn’t qualifies her as equal, which could actually be debatable.

These are quite some heady stuffs wrapped in cuddly insanity that’s this comic, which is why I love it so damn much.

Don’t worry. The comic hasn’t been ruined for me. It sounds like you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take Paul’s shortcomings today and weave a compelling story from them if you so choose. After all, failure makes eventual success all the sweeter.

But Eon was gonna blow things up. And keep Kyra prisoner forever. She had to be stopped. And who knows? Maybe she’ll be back again . . .

No argument there. I’m not saying that she shouldn’t have been stopped, only that the way the story went about it didn’t have the same strength of understanding and compassion that we normally get in this comic when facing antagonists. Disconnecting her from the weapons is reasonable, the problem is more in how Paul related to her (or didn’t relate to her rather), disregarding her value as a potentially sapient being.

Ah, this page makes it look like the comic is over!

The first major story is over with most issues resolved. Kyra is free, Eon isn’t a threat, and characters have had their arcs. Is the comic completely over all done THE END that’s it? Doesn’t have to be! There’s still some loose ends and if anything a free Kyra means so many possibilities! I’ll talk about it more on Monday as I continue to think about what’s next.

Maaaan. It’s so nice to see this big ol story come to a close. I’ve been following this comic since like 2011/12, so most of my teenage years! I’ve never been super sociable, only commenting here and there (under Darkness, in the past), but I really appreciate this whole webcomic existing. It’s my favorite. I look forward to whatever may come in the future!

I’m ever so glad that you enjoyed and stuck through it – from the terrible update schedule of 2015 to the death of the original site (rip original comments). Ah, if only we could all be fearless like Kyra. We could go out into the world to see its things and have the best time doing it! But for now, at least we can see her do it in her own crazy way XD

I thought I’d have so much to say when this day came, but all I can think of is “98 pages? That’s almost the title of your fishtank comic!”

Honestly, I don’t know what to THINK now that this day is here. The whole month of August has been an emotional roller coaster for me. I’ve been sitting around all day in a bewildered state to be honest, haha. I guess I’ll have more to say later.

Also, fish tank comic? W-what fish tank comic hahaha. Oh boy that’s a whole different story for the dozen people who remember it!

Been here since 2012 I think?

Feels weird to have such a long-running story come to a close, but, well, it has to at some point. I think I started reading it during high school, and I’m almost through college now? It’s been a long time.

Thanks for everything.
