“If Wild Stray were dead, she wouldn’t have to eat or defend herself.”

THAT CERTAINLY TOOK A TURN.

She’s saying Wild Stray kills not to eat or defend herself.

The dogs are upset about casual murder, which Wild Stray and Kyra both take part in. Kyra doesn’t understand this is wrong.

No… I’m pretty sure Kyra’s not a complete psychopath. A naive child who acts out when upset? Definitely, but not a psychopath. She kills when she’s hungry, and doesn’t understand why that’s wrong.

Also, I’m pretty sure scrawny Wild Stray can’t afford to be killing stuff she’s not gonna eat.

…somehow I get the feeling that the author has never met a good dog :(

On the contrary, the reason these dogs are so offended by Kyra is because she kills animals indiscriminately and generally makes herself a nuisance in their human owners’ homes. The dogs are trying to deal with a threat to their community, which correlates with their loyalty to humans as well as their pack instincts. A dog trying to take care of it’s human’s home and fellow animals’ well being strikes me as a dog who understands, or was taught very well, that it’s wrong to chase critters and chew on the sofa, which strikes me as a good dog.

The only reason we see the dogs as bad here is because the threat to their community they are trying to deal with also happens to be the protagonist of the comic.
