So yeah, one of the great parts about making a comic is coming up with characters you love … then finding excuses to draw them.  It’s so much more exciting than just drawing pictures.  I also enjoyed when coming to these pages I was all “oh yes we know Kyra wouldn’t like gemstones and why!”  Watches are different though.  She can be impressed by some of our technical achievements … when they’re not computers that think for us and try to destroy everything.  I do like the idea of Kyra wearing a bunch of watches on each wrist because she finds them interesting.  However we can also assume that Kyra has no need for understanding human’s stubborn concept of time so in the end she wouldn’t.

Hmm, well … another great part about these characters you love and draw is if it DOESN’T fit into the comic you can just draw it anyway as an aside.  I should find time (heh) to draw watch Kyra.  Until then I’ll see you all next week!

Here I was thinking Kyra was going to buy the watch, y’know, so she can have a nice time-keeper-majig! ????

Plus it would’ve been amusing to see the change of behaviour the shopkeep might have if she suddenly jumped categories from being just a looky-loo to a valued paying customer.

First hurdle you have to get over is that she has no interest in keeping track of the human’s time number system. Then while paying for the craft and skills is one thing, inflating the price for clout makes it no different than those diamonds.

Even worse … would they even sell such a prestigious watch to a wild beast who won’t appreciate it and probably break it after –

Oh wait, wait never mind. She’s been distracted by that squirrel over there. The watches are safe for now.

Well if it’s THAT easy to break, then it’s not REALLY all that much of a luxury watch now is it? ????

Hey, there’s a new marketing angle right there. Dinosaur-grade* durability for watches!
“Don’t wear a watch unless it’s strong enough for a DINOSAUR! ????”

I’m surprised that Kyra wouldn’t have at least some inclinations towards wanting to track Time (better than just looking up at the sun, at least). It may be an imaginary construct, but imaginary things still have real effects. 5pm may not literally exist, but when it arrives it definitely causes some very real traffic conditions!

Maybe it’s the connected concept of Time Management that Kyra’s inner rebellious teen finds distasteful about the human time schedule? Knowing the time means knowing you’re late!

*durability rated under routine levels of dinosaur activity. Any active attempts to destroy equipment are not guaranteed. No watch can be THAT durable without removing glass from the build materials… ????

Part of it is her rebelliousness, yes. The other part is her stubbornness against human things she doesn’t think are THAT useful. Kyra doesn’t enjoy thinking she’s right, she enjoying KNOWING she’s right. But that’s another story for another day.

“Strong enough for a dinosaur” is another story idea for another day! Oh how I sometimes wish I could make more than three chapters a year, heh.

Intricate might be the word you’re looking for, Kyra.

I, too, greatly appreciate the gizmos and devices our society has cooked up. Just think, we’ve constructed great mechanical beasts to carry us around, and built an infrastructure around them so we can go whizzing around at high speeds with minimal danger to everyone involved, so long as all the rules are followed. Just thinking about it gets me excited, and I don’t even like cars that much.

Kyra seems to enjoy devices that she can see and understand. Remember how impressed she was when she saw a train for the first time? She would be more impressed by the gear system of a ten speed bike than a super computer where the magic is hidden.

Wonder if she’d be interested in seeing the construction of a computer. All the little diodes and circuit boards that work together to create these ridiculous counting contraptions we’ve cooked up.
